Pork and apples blend well together making this Apple Sausage Gravy a delicious version of the American classic Sausage Gravy. The apple juice or apple cider added to the milk, make the gravy lighter and add an unexpected sweetness. All you need is some fresh out of the oven Buttermilk Biscuits and your breakfast is ready.
Apple Sausage Gravy

Ingredients
- 4 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 lb bulk pork sausage, crumbled
- 1 small onion, small diced
- 2 tsp dried sage
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup apple juice or apple cider
- 2 tsp Dijon mustard
- kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- In a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter until foamy. Add sausage and cook until no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Transfer cooked sausage to a paper towel lined plate.
- Cook the onion and dried sage in the drippings until onion softens; about 5 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook, stirring for 1 minute. Whisk in the milk and apple juice. Add the sausage and whisk occasionally until gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Whisk in the Dijon mustard and season with salt and pepper to taste.
